The pair, while international team-mates, have long been on the opposing side as part of their many El Clasico clashes between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Alves, played for Barcelona from 2008 to 2016, before briefly making a come-back under former team-mate Xavi last season.
In his return to the Nou Camp, he made 17 appearances in total, scoring one goal.
Though Alves had been hoping to stay at the Nou Camp for a further season, Xavi decided not to extend the right-back’s contract, meaning he is free to look for another club.

Marcelo had also been hoping to stay at Real Madrid, after an incredible 15-year stint at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Likes Barcelona with Alves, Real Madrid decided not to renew Marcelo’s contract, meaning he will be free to play for another club, for the first time since January 2007.
An emotional tribute ceremony was held for Marcelo, in which Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and club legend Raul were both left in tears.
‘I played for the greatest club in the world,’ he said.
He added: ‘I want to thank my wife Clarice, I wouldn’t be the man I am without her. And my sons who watched their dad play for the greatest club in the world.’

When Marcelo arrived at Real Madrid, club legend Raul was in the autumn of his career but still appeared to leave a significant mark on the young Brazilian.
He paid tribute to the legendary forward, saying: ‘Thank you Raul for being a captain and an example for me. I have never said it but you have been my role model. Thank you.’
Ronaldo became the majority owner of Valladolid in September 2018, after buying 51 percent of the club’s shares in a deal worth £25million.

In December, the former striker also purchased Brazilian giants Cruzeiro where he began his professional career.
If he were able to land his compatriots in stunning deals, he would sign two players with a lot of experience – particularly in winning trophies.
Marcelo won 25 pieces of silverware at Madrid, while Alves picked up 26 while playing for Barcelona.
