Brazil icon Ronaldinho returns to football for Gerard Pique’s Kings League

Ronaldinho stepped onto the pitch once more to take part in Gerard Pique's Kings League.

The Brazil icon turned out for Porcinos FC on Sunday (February 26) at the age of 42. He played in the eighth round of the seven-a-side league founded last year by fellow Barcelona legend Pique, who enlisted a number of other football personalities and internet celebrities.

Each week the teams are allowed to bring in a 12th player. Retired stars Iker Casillas and Sergio Aguero, who are both chairmen of teams, have laced up their boots, as too have the likes of Javier Hernandez and Barca boss Xavi.

A current La Liga player was even believed to have featured earlier this year while wearing a mask to conceal their identity.

Ronaldinho followed in their footsteps as Porcinos faced Pio FC. He was given the opportunity to score when his side won a penalty.

But when the referee asked if he'd be taking it, he hilariously replied: "I'm not going to be running, let someone else run."

His impact on the game was otherwise limited with former Deportivo and Espanyol defender Alberto Lopo largely marking him out of the action.

Ronaldinho was ultimately on the losing side as Porcinos were beat 3-1 on pens after a goalless draw in normal time. He's featured in several futsal-style tournaments since hanging up his professional boots in January 2018.

Being in Spain is convenient for him at present as his 17-year-old son recently signed for his former club Barca, joining their youth ranks after a successful spell on trial.

Joao de Assis Moreira made his debut against Manchester United in a friendly earlier this month and will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of his dad, who scored 33 goals in 97 international appearances.
