Brazil fans went nuts after Lionel Messi penalty miss – but joy was short-lived

Brazil fans went beserk after Argentina star Lionel Messi's penalty miss against Poland – but their joy was short-lived.

Argentina went into the match needing a win to secure qualification from Group C. And Messi was given the perfect opportunity to put his nation ahead when he was awarded a controversial penalty assisted by VAR.

The decision-making technology decided Polish stopper Wojciech Szczesny's arm had whacked Messi in the head when he tried to retrieve a cross, although fans on social media furiously contested the decision. Former Arsenal keeper Szczesny was so sure that Messi wouldn't be given a penalty by the referee – he confidently bet the Paris Saint-Germain forward 100 euros (£86.)

But despite losing the wager, Szczesny gained retribution when he saved Messi's effort moments later. And he wasn't the only one smiling after Messi fluffed his spot-kick.

The 35-year-old's foiled attempt brought delight to Brazil fans who were ecstatic when Messi missed. The Brazilian collective who were watching the game in the pub erupted with joy in celebration as a dejected Messi trudged away from the spot.

Swathes of yellow shirts were seen jumping up and down with huge grins etched on their faces as Messi's foiled attempt left rivals Argentina facing a shock exit from the competition.

But the Samba Boys' faithful weren't dancing for much longer after Alexis MacAllister and Julian Alvarez spared Messi's blushes with two consecutive second-half goals to thrust Argentina to the top of Group C and into the knockout stages.

However, it's not all doom and gloom for Brazil as they've already secured a spot in the last 16 after winning their first two games of the tournament. Brazil's next match is against Cameroon on Friday evening, and Tite's side will be looking to extract maximum points from their final group stage clash against the African nation.
