Brazil dub Roy Keane ‘executioner’ for dancing criticism and urge him to join in

Brazilians have branded Roy Keane the "executioner" after he criticised their dancing celebrations against South Korea.

The Selecao dismantled their last-16 opponents by scoring four goals inside 36 minutes of Monday night's World Cup clash. And with each goal came an extraordinary outpouring of joy.

Vinicius Jr, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta all celebrated in style, showing off their flamboyant dance moves and even involving manager Tite at one point. But their antics struck a nerve with ITV pundit Keane, who deemed their display "disrespectful."

Keane said at half-time: "I don't like this. People say it's their culture. But I think that's really disrespecting the opposition. It's four goals, and they are doing it every time.

“I don't mind so much the first jig, it's the one after that, and the manager getting involved. I'm not happy about it. I don't think it's good at all.”

Brazilian fans and media have not taken kindly to the notoriously hard-headed Keane, responding to his criticism in savage fashion in the wake of the game.

Leading Brazilian TV channel TNT Sports wrote on Twitter: “HELLO, ROY KEANE! DON'T LIKE THE DANCES? BITE YOUR BACK! THIS HERE IS BRAZIL! See if you can do something like that! Even Tite will dance here! Like it or not.”

Another Brazilian broadcaster, Globo, took aim at Keane by recalling his lowest moments as a player. It dubbed him an "executioner" in relation to his 1999 Intercontinental Cup goal against Palmeiras, before bringing up his feud with Ireland boss Mick McCarthy in 2002 and his infamous career-ending challenge on Alf-Inge Haaland.

Brazilian Serie A club Botafogo’s head coach Luis Castro said on sportv, via Globo: “Roy Keane doesn't understand the culture of Brazilian football. He doesn't understand the Brazilian team. So, he speaks in an inelegant way due to what happened today.

“We all know that's not disrespectful to anyone. Celebrating players is no disrespect to anyone. What shows there is a great union between coach and players. And a set of synergies that can catapult a team to great achievements.”

Furious fans joined in with the reaction on social media, labelling Keane a “butcher” and “one of the dirtiest players in football history". Others brought up his lack of goals and assists in World Cup tournaments as an explanation for his perceived bitterness.

Despite all of the uproar, Brazil’s superstars are unlikely to ditch their samba moves if they net against Croatia in the quarter-finals. The Selecao will be expected to do the business against the 2018 finalists on Friday, though some have suggested they have benefited from an easy run throughout the tournament.
