Boris Johnson is fighting to keep the Euro 2020 final at Wembley by offering a 'sensible' solution, after reports emerged on Friday morning that UEFA could move the showpiece following England's lockdown extension.

Reports suggest that Wembley's showpiece games – the semi-final and the final – could be moved to Hungary, where COVID rules are more relaxed.

Full attendances have already graced the tournament in Budapest and Copenhagen, and hopes for a large attendance at Wembley were high.

Johnson has confirmed that discussion are ongoing with UEFA, however, he has also stated public health will be a priority in the talks.

When asked if he'd wave quarantine rules for UEFA VIPs Johnson said: "We'll do what we have to do to keep the country safe from COVID, that's obviously going to be our priority.

"We'll be talking to UEFA about what they want and see if we can make some sensible accommodations.

"But the priority obviously has to be public health."

The UK currently requires visitors from abroad to quarantine if they are not on the UK's green list, however, the only countries on the green list in the Euros are Scotland and Wales.

A similar situation played out with the Champions League final, when the British government pushed to have the showpiece held at Wembley with two British teams competing.

However, Johnson refused to relax quarantine rules for UEFA execs – which lead to the final being awarded to the Estádio do Dragão in Porto.

Johnson will be keen to avoid a similar scenario as England looks set to hold its first major international tournament final since Germany pushed aside the Czech Republic at Euro 96.
