Manchester United defender Phil Jones could be on the brink of sealing a shock exit to Bordeaux in the final stages of the January transfer window. Jones is not a part of Ralf Rangnick’s plans for the remainder of the season and could leave Old Trafford to move to France, according to reports.

Jones has only made one appearance for United this season after becoming the forgotten man behind the scenes at the club.

The 29-year-old had gone 712 days without playing due to long-term injury problems before featuring in the 1-0 defeat against Wolves on January 3.

Despite returning to full fitness, he remains well down the pecking order in Rangnick’s side, with Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly all ahead of him.

United have given the centre-back permission to speak to other clubs this month and Bordeaux have now stepped forward with a proposition, according to L’Equipe.

The French side have recently offloaded defensive midfielder Otavio, on loan to Atlético Mineiro, and striker Josh Maja, to Stoke City on loan with an option to buy, and want to reinforce their defence.

Bordeaux have already signed 34-year-old Brazilian defender Marcelo from Lyon, but after kicking ex-Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny out of their first team squad, they remain short of bodies at the back.

The Daily Mail says Jones has been left frustrated with his long spell on the sidelines and is desperate for regular playing time to prove himself.

Several English clubs have shown an interest recently but have only been keen on a loan deal, or taking him on a pay-as-you-play basis.

Benfica also previously looked at Jones, but it now seems as though his best chance of leaving the club he joined from Blackburn in 2011 comes from France.

Jones is far from the only United player still pushing for an exit from the club before 11pm on Monday.

Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek and Dean Henderson are all reportedly unhappy with their situation at United and are keen to leave before the deadline.

Lingard has been the subject of interest from West Ham, Everton and Newcastle, but United have delayed his exit through their demands.

United are unwilling to let the midfielder join one of their rivals for a top-four spot and have demanded a loan fee and a bonus for avoiding relegation from Newcastle, which would add up to £15million.

Van de Beek is wanted by Crystal Palace for a loan deal, while Everton have also revisited their interest from the summer.

Whatever happens, it looks as though United will be busy over the next 24 hours.
