Boehly calls for 'North vs South All-Star game' in Premier League

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly calls for the Premier League to introduce an annual ‘North vs South All-Star game’ to help raise money for the English football pyramid, as he insists football can ‘learn a lesson’ from US sports

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly has suggested the Premier League should introduce an all-star North versus South game to help raise money for the English football pyramid.

The Blues’ American co-owner has also called for a ‘four-team tournament’ to take place at the bottom of the table to decide who goes down at the end of the season rather than straight relegation for three teams.

Boehly, who led a consortium to complete a £4.25billion takeover of Chelsea in May, has claimed the Premier League could learn a lot from American sports in creating more revenue.

It would see the best Premier League stars face off in a exhibition game, which Boehly says would raise money for the English football pyramid

In a wide-ranging interview at the SALT conference in New York, the 48-year-old said: ‘I hope the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports and really starts to figure out, “Why wouldn’t we do a tournament with the bottom four teams? Why isn’t there an all-star game?”

‘You could do a North vs South all-star game in the Premier League and fund whatever the pyramid needed very easily. Everyone likes the idea of more revenue for the League.’

American sports such as the NFL and NBA host an annual all-star game in which a number of the best players from across the league take part in an exhibition style contest.

His idea of a Premier League all-star game would presumably see the best and most noteworthy players face off from teams in the north of England – the likes of Liverpool and both Manchester clubs – face off against the majority of London clubs in the south.

He also admitted he does not say ‘hard nos’ when asked about the European Super League.

Boehly also revealed that Tuchel was sacked because he did not share the new ownership’s vision for the club.

He added: ‘Tuchel is obviously extremely talented and someone who had great success with Chelsea.

‘Our vision for the club was to find a manager who really wanted to collaborate with us. The reality was that we weren’t sure that Thomas saw it the same way we saw it.

‘We just didn’t have a shared vision for the future. It wasn’t a decision that was made because of a single win or loss.’
