Bernd Leno facing Germany axe meaning Arsenal exit in January now likely

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno is reportedly in danger of being “ousted” from the German national team after falling down the pecking order this season.

The 29-year-old has not started a Premier League match since the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City in August, losing his place to the younger Aaron Ramsdale who was signed this summer from Sheffield United.

But while Ramsdale was bought in order to provide competition, not many would have predicted he would displace Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper of three years with such haste.

And Fussball.News now report his lack of game time could lead to him missing out on selection for Germany, thereby making a move away from the Gunners more likely.

Leno recently revealed his disappointment publicly about no longer being the first-choice keeper under Mikel Arteta.

He told Sports Bild: “There was no clear reason why I was out [of the recent Tottenham game], but it had nothing to do with my performance.

“He [Arteta] is the trainer, he decides. Of course it’s difficult for me.”

The interview, and Leno’s contract which runs out next summer, have since led to speculation that the German will leave before the season is up.

That may be sped up now if Germany head coach Hansi Flick indeed ‘ousts’ him as Fussball.News claim.

Flick, who won the sextuple as Bayern Munich manager, operates a ‘performance principle’ with his squad, meaning he selects players based on performance.

And with Ramsdale registering impressive performances, as he did again against Brighton on the weekend, he could quickly be replaced as Germany’s third-choice by Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp.

For now though. Leno has been called up for Die Mannschaft’s upcoming international fixtures against Romania and North Macedonia on October 8 and 11, respectively.
