Berghuis breaks silence after Ajax star filmed ‘punching’ Twente fan after loss
Ajax winger Steven Berghuis has apologised after he appeared to hit an FC Twente fan following their 3-1 loss to the side on Sunday. The 31-year-old was caught up in the incident while boarding the team bus to return home to Amsterdam.
As Berghuis walked towards the bus he appeared to take exception to a member of the crowd watching on and was caught on camera lunging for the fan.
In a statement released shortly after a video of the altercation made the rounds of social media, Berghuis said: “I regret my actions, I should not have done this. After every away game, we get a lot of threats thrown at us at the bus while we take time out to sign autographs for fans.
“I’m used to it by now, but people think they can just shout anything. My reaction doesn’t solve anything, I get that. It’s not good, I have an exemplary role as a player of Ajax.”
A statement from Ajax, per De Telegraaf revealed that he had been fined for his actions.“Steven reacted in the wrong way. He quickly made this known to [manager] John Heitinga and immediately apologized,” read the press release.
“Upon arrival at the Arena [Ajax’s home ground], he had a conversation with Heitinga, Edwin van der Sar and Sven Mislintat. They also wanted to hear his side of the story. The conclusion is that his reaction was wrong and that Ajax disapproves. He has been fined.”

The defeat capped off a woeful Eredivisie campaign for Ajax that saw them place third in the league. It is the first since 2009 that the 26-time champions have finished outside of the two Champions League qualification spots.
Champions, Feyenoord, who finished 13 points ahead of Ajax, have qualified for the group stage, while second-placed PSV Eindhoven will enter in the third qualifying round. Ajax, meanwhile, will have to settle for Europa League football next season.
