Berbatov urges Van de Beek to consider quitting Man Utd after nightmare spell
Former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov has urged Donny van de Beek to end his nightmare stay at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek arrived at the Red Devils last summer after a decent spell at Dutch giants Ajax.
However, the Dutchman has struggled to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans, and he only managed four starts in the Premier League last campaign.
Van de Beek didn't feature in either of United's opening two Premier League fixtures, acting as an unused substitute.
And Berbatov, who was speaking to Betfair, has urged Van de Beek to leave for the good of his career.
"It's a really strange, disappointing and surprising situation," the Bulgarian star said.
"They spent around £35 million on him and, to pay that for a player who isn't starting many games, doesn't make sense.
"I'm not blaming the player at all, but for me, it's one of the most disappointing transfers ever.
"He has got a lot of quality. I don't like it when clubs buy for the sake of buying and this is one of those situations.
Do you think Donny van de Beek should leave Manchester United? Let us know in the comments section
"I'm sure he's banging on the manager's door and asking questions.
"I think if he's not happy, Van de Beek should push to leave. His place in the national team is at risk, especially now with Louis van Gaal in charge. Van Gaal is a disciplinarian who like his players to play football.
"Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are untouchable in the United midfield at the moment.
"Scott McTominay, Fred and even 33-year-old Nemanja Matic are ahead of van de Beek."

However, Marc Overmars disagrees with Berbatov: "I think Donny should just fight, stay next year and try to claim a starting place.
"You shouldn’t leave so quickly," Overmars, who used to play for Arsenal, told NOS in an interview last May.
While countryman and former United star Edwin Van der Sar said: "Of course I feel sad for Donny.
"He walked the perfect path before joining United. He joined the [Ajax] first team from the academy, became a starter, won trophies, performed in Europe.
"But the midfield of Manchester United is too stacked, they’ve not had any injuries. It’s hard for him."
The 24-year-old built a reputation as one of Europe's most exciting talents during Ajax's baled Champions League run.
But he has failed to impress at Old Trafford with limited opportunities.
