Benzema close to tears as fans give standing ovation in final Real Madrid game

Karim Benzema was moved to tears after receiving a standing ovation in his final game for Real Madrid.

The Frenchman kicked his final ball for Los Blancos on Sunday night after a 14-year spell. Benzema’s departure was confirmed earlier in the day ahead of the last La Liga game of the season against Athletic Club.

And after more than 600 appearances for Madrid, Benzema was given an emotional farewell while being substituted off at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benzema netted his 354th goal for the club from the penalty spot 72 minutes into the match before pointing up affectionately to the stands. He was subbed off immediately after to rapturous applause.

The 35-year-old skipper soaked in the two minute long standing ovation as he walked off the pitch and clapped the adoring supporters.

He was visibly overcome with emotion as he embraced manager Carlo Ancelotti for the last time, while the commentator said: “A few tears from Benzema, a hug from his manager.”

Benzema’s sudden departure comes despite the five-time Champions League winner having hoped to stay for an additional year beyond the 2022/23 season – one which was marred by constant injuries.

However, a new offer by Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad in the region of £345million is believed to have swayed the 2022 Ballon d’Or recipient.

Al-Ittihad are currently managed by former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo and won the 2022/23 Saudi Pro League, finishing five points ahead of Benzema’s former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr.

Benzema enjoyed his best campaign for Real just last season with 44 goals in all competitions, clinching a fourth La Liga title alongside the Champions League.

The captain played a huge part in this season’s Copa del Rey conquest, netting a hat-trick and notching an assist against Barcelona in the semi-finals before beating Osasuna in the final.
