Ben Mee has let slip that Brentford players receive a bonus for scoring goals from set-pieces.
The experienced defender revealed that Thomas Frank’s players get an extra payout at the end of the season based on the number of goals they score from dead ball situations.
Of Brentford’s 58 goals last season, 16 came from set-pieces, making the Bees the most effective team in the Premier League at scoring from corners, free kicks and throw ins.
Mee told Ben Foster’s Fozcast podcast: ‘We have a set-piece bonus, we’re big on set-pieces and things like that so hopefully we’ll get a few more goals this year.
‘If we score from a set-piece within a certain time, at the end of the season the lads will get a bonus.’

Thomas Frank has coached his side to become the most effective scorers from set-pieces in the Premier League
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously accused Brentford of ‘stretching the rules’ from set-pieces but that has not stopped Frank and his coaching staff making them a key part of the team’s attacking arsenal.
Brentford have been lauded for their use of data and analytics in reaching the Premier league and surviving relegation comfortably for two seasons in a row.
Mee added that this philosophy is also key to their approach to set-pieces.
He said: ‘Brentford are big on stats and percentages of scoring goals. Set-pieces is a high chance of getting a shot on goal or a chance.
‘We work off that and the end of the season we add it up from for and against. It gives you an incentive to go for it.’
Having signed from Burnley last summer, Mee enjoyed a successful first season in west London.

Brentford are unbeaten in their opening two games of the new Premier League season
He featured in all but one game as Brentford finished ninth in the Premier League, scoring three goals and enjoying the club’s unique bonus at the end of the campaign.
The 33-year-old made it clear that goals do not have to come directly from a dead ball to count towards the bonus.
‘The second phase could be part of the set play, within a certain amount of time – we sort of measure it within like 15 seconds it counts as a set-piece.’
Unbeaten after their first two Premier League games, Brentford are back in action on Saturday when they host Crystal Palace at the Gtech Community Stadium.
