Ben Foster hits out at Gareth Southgate for snubbing Ben White

‘It’s just not right’: Ben Foster hits out at Gareth Southgate for snubbing Arsenal’s Ben White in his latest England squad… after the Three Lions boss claimed his omission was due to a ‘depth of talent’ at right-back

  • Foster claimed there is more than meets the eye with regards to White’s snub
  • The 25-year-old has been a key member of the Gunners backline this season

Ben Foster has hit out at Gareth Southgate for snubbing Arsenal’s Ben White in his latest England squad.

The Three Lions boss, 52, raised eyebrows after choosing to leave the right-back, 25, out of his England squad.

In a press conference last week, he said: ‘The three boys that are in as right full-backs, we’ve got them as just ahead of those two. We are blessed in that position with the depth of talent.’

But Foster, who won eight caps playing for England, claimed there is more than meets the eye with regards to the former Brighton centre-back’s snub.

‘Something has gone on there for sure,’ the former Manchester United goalkeeper, 39, said on his YouTube channel.

‘Every week he is doing it. He’s getting involved in goals. He’s getting involved in assists for fun.

‘He’s playing really, really well, Arsenal are on fire and these are the sort of players that when you are naming your England squad, you should be picking these players in form.’

He added: ‘Whatever happened in the World Cup happened… I’ve got no scoop on this. But something [else] has gone on there.

‘It’s just not right. [Gareth Southgate is] selecting Harry Maguire and players like that. It just screams of a fall out.’

White has been a key member of Arsenal’s backline this season, but was a notable absentee from Southgate’s England squad last week.

Southgate defended his non-selection of the defender by stating that he feels the likes of Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James – who has only just returned from injury – are currently ahead of him in the running for England’s right-back birth.

White has played 36 times for Arsenal this season, and scored his first goal for the club in their dramatic 3-2 win over Bournemouth earlier this month.

Arsenal will head into the international break eight points clear in the Premier League title race after Bukayo Saka scored twice in a 4-1 home defeat of Crystal Palace on Sunday.

With chasers Manchester City otherwise engaged in the FA Cup, Arsenal took full advantage with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring and Granit Xhaka also on target.

The Gunners were dumped out of the Europa League by Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

However, Mikel Arteta’s men remain on course for their first Premier League triumph since 2004 following their dominant derby victory.
