Ben Davies likely Liverpool shirt number as he prepares to complete deal

Ben Davies is set to complete a deadline day transfer to Liverpool.

The Reds will pay around £1.6million for the centre-back, with youngster Sepp van den Berg going the other way on loan for the remainder of the season.

Celtic and Bournemouth were both keen on snapping up the defender this month, with the Cherries even prepared to pay more than Liverpool.

But once Davies knew the Premier League champions were keen on him his heart was set.

The deal contains a 20 per cent sell-on clause that would see Preston earn a cut of any future Liverpool business relating to Davies.

The centre-back will be unveiled this Monday… but what shirt number will he be handed?

The most likely answer is the number two.

Most recently worn by Nathaniel Clyne, the number two is free following the right-back's move to Crystal Palace.

Other numbers available to Davies are: 16, 24, 25, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 34.

Liverpool have been linked with a second centre-back this January, and if an agreement can be reached in time then this may have an impact on Davies being handed the number two.

Currently at Preston, the centre-back sports the number six shirt, but this is unavailable at Liverpool as it is worn by Thiago Alcantara.
