Jude Bellingham could spring a surprise in the transfer market next summer with Liverpool and Real Madrid among the European heavyweights chasing his signature. The teenage midfielder effectively has his pick of the bunch amid another stellar season in the Bundesliga as teams line up to make early headway with his entourage.

The former Birmingham City youth product is now into his fourth season of regular first-team football, despite being well short of his 20th birthday. This campaign, he has already notched 10 goal contributions, including five in the Champions League as he solidifies his status as a key man for BVB.

Wealthy teams are readying themselves for a fearsome transfer battle next summer with Liverpool and Real Madrid supposedly among those waiting to pounce. Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is also thought to be eyeing up a swoop but, according to Sky Sports correspondent Kevin Hatchard, a rogue option is under consideration.

Bellingham reportedly has no firm plans on which team to join at this stage and, despite the offer of bright lights and big money elsewhere, staying at Dortmund has not been ruled out.

The youngster forged a formidable partnership with Erling Haaland last season and, in his absence, he has gone on to become one of Dortmund’s most dependable stars. His standing in the squad could persuade him to stay and become a more mature, well-rounded player by the time he eventually leaves.

Bellingham’s touted £130million price tag would make him one of the most expensive players in history but it almost certainly wouldn’t be high enough to stop an interested party coughing up. The 19-year-old is in superb form heading into the World Cup, where he is expected to partner Declan Rice in England’s midfield.

Other teams are sure to enter the equation if, after careful consideration, it becomes clear that Bellingham sees his future away from Dortmund. Manchester United gave him a tour of Old Trafford as a youngster and director of football John Murtough supposedly maintains a dialogue with the player’s family.

BVB take on Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Bellingham’s header gave his side the advantage in the reverse fixture but two late goals from John Stones and Haaland ensured that the visitors left empty handed.

“I think Dortmund is a perfect place for young talented players to come,” City boss Pep Guardiola told reporters in the lead-up to this week’s tie. “Maybe if Jude Bellingham was in England he would go to City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham, maybe he would not get the minutes.

“The best way for a young player to get better is to play minutes. He was 17 when he arrived but it was not just about his quality, how he was leading, his kicking, going to the referee.”
