Beckham refuses to rule out possibility of Messi signing for Inter Miami

Inter Miami owner David Beckham has refused to rule out the prospect of luring Lionel Messi to the MLS in the future.

Messi left Barcelona last summer in dramatic circumstances after PSG took advantage of Barca's financial woes to swoop for the Argentine superstar.

However, Messi has endured a fairly rotten time in Spain – and there is speculation that he could be set for a spell in America before he brings the curtain down on his illustrious career.

Beckham's new MLS franchise have been linked with a move for the 34-year-old.

And Beckham has done nothing to quash the noise surrounding Messi and Miami.

Beckham told the Miami Herald: 'I've always said I want the best players in our club and playing in our shirt because there's a certain expectation.

"Unfortunately, sometimes it can be a bad thing. But most of the time it's a good thing. When I first started this project, people were saying 'This guy is coming, that guy is coming, [Cristiano] Ronaldo is coming, Messi's coming.

"At the end of the day, we need to win, whether it's with the young kids or stars. Our fans will be happy if we have stars on the team, but they'll be even happier if they're seeing young players coming through our academy and lifting the MLS Cup."

Beckham's former United team-mate, Phil Neville, is the man at the helm in Miami after he was handed a deal back in January 2021.

And he recently backed up Beckham's claims on wanting the best players at the club – and the former England women's boss believes that players of that ilk want to join the club.

Neville told ESPN: "The best players in the world want to come to this football club.

"That's what makes this football club what it is. It's so attractive because of the location, because of our ownership, because of everything that goes with playing for this football club.

"Like I say, the best players in the world want to play for this franchise and we're lucky in that way.

"But we've got to pick the right one, and we will because Chris, David and Jose want this franchise to be successful and there's a certain type of DP [designated player] that makes teams successful."
