BBC viewers rage over commentary for England's last-16 clash
BBC viewers rage as commentary for England’s last-16 World Cup match with Nigeria is AHEAD of the on-screen picture… with fans complaining that it ‘killed the suspense’
- England reached the quarter-finals with a penalty shootout win over Nigeria
- Viewers at home though complained over the BBC’s coverage during the game
- They voiced their displeasure over the commentary being ahead of the visuals
BBC’s coverage of England’s World Cup clash with Nigeria has come under heavy fire on social media after the commentary seemed to be out of sync with the on-screen visuals at times during the match.
Viewers noticed early on into the match that the commentary was slightly ahead of the picture – leaving a frustrating and confusing experience for those watching at home.
One moment in the match saw Nigeria’s Ashleigh Plumptre fire a shot which cannoned off the crossbar as Sarina Wiegman’s side faced heavy early pressure.
Those watching the BBC coverage live on television however would have heard about the shot hitting the post from commentators Robyn Cowen and Rachel Brown-Finnis, before they actually saw it.
It has led to frustration among fans at home about their viewing experience, saying that it has ‘killed the suspense’ with one supporter saying that if they have to pay a license fee the BBC ‘could at least make sure their pictures and commentary are in sync.’

Some fans also saw the funny side of the strange delay, suggesting that it made the commentators sound ‘psychic’.
Sooz Kempner tweeted: ‘The commentary on the BBC is bizarrely a moment ahead of the action so it’s making Robyn Cowen and Rachel Brown-Finnis look pure psychic.’
Matt Hutchinson joked that ‘BBC’s commentary is predicting the future’ while another fan described hearing ‘off the bar’ seconds before seeing it happen was ‘like a double heart attack’.
Another fan asked: ‘Watching the first bit of this Women’s World Cup I’ve properly watched and the BBC commentary is ahead of the f***ing picture.
‘”Oh and a towering header there” the ball wasn’t even in the box from the corner yet.’

While another supporter asked: ‘Could you give the BBC a nudge and get them to synch the commentary with the action. We were told they’d hit the bar before we saw it. Other than that… come on England!’
It was a nerve-wracking game for the Lionesses who went into extra-time a woman down after Lauren James was sent off for a stamp.
The game went to penalties where England took a 4-2 victory despite Georgia Stanway missing with the opening spot-kick.
