BBC News sorry as ticker shares "Man Utd are rubbish" in brilliant live blunder
BBC News have been forced to issue an apology after inadvertently savaging Manchester United during a live broadcast.
Viewers could barely believe their eyes as the words 'Manchester United are rubbish' appeared on the channel's live news ticker at the bottom of the screen, forcing the Beeb into a mad scramble to find out how the blunder happened.
Over an hour later, they explained that a trainee learning the system had accidentally published the text and said that they hoped United fans "weren't offended" by it.
"A little earlier some of you may have noticed something pretty unusual on the ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen, with news, making a comment about Manchester United, and I hope Manchester United fans weren’t offended by it," the presenter said.
"Let me just explain what was happening behind the scenes. Someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put text on the ticker, so they were just writing random things no in earnest, and that comment appeared, so apologies if you saw that and you were offended.
"Certainly that was a mistake and it wasn't meant to appear on the screen."
Naturally, rival fans used the blunder to stick the knife in on social media, particularly in light of United's awful season.
Does that trainee deserve a pay rise? Let us know what you think in the comment section.
"Not exactly news, we've all know this for a long time," one fan tweeted, while another wrote: "Fact check – this is true!"
The gaffe was the last thing United needed just two days after bringing their worst-ever Premier League season to a desperate end with a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils were expected to challenge for the title this season after spending over £100 million on Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, but struggled to keep pace with the league-leaders from the get-go and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November.
Ralf Rangnick's appointment did little to raise spirits or get points on boards, and problems on and off the field only seemed to worsen as the season wore on. Eventually, United limped to a sixth-place finish and ended the campaign with a goal difference of zero.
Perhaps the BBC were spot on.
