Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich heaped praise on Joao Cancelo after the Portugal international registered an assist for the Bundesliga giants in their clash with Mainz on Wednesday night.
The 28-year-old defender joined the German side from Manchester City on deadline day – signing an initial loan deal with a £61million buy option at the end of the season.
Cancelo was handed his first start under Julian Nagelsmann on Wednesday night and his team-mates were impressed with his performance. Kimmich hailed his ‘amazing quality’, while Jamal Musiala said he is a ‘great technical player’.
Cancelo was thrown straight into Bayern’s starting XI for their German Cup last-16 tie with Mainz Wednesday night. As a result, Alphonso Davies was dropped to the bench.
The defender – who lined up at left-back – impressed Nagelsmann and his Bayern Munich team-mates by assisting Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s opener after just 17 minutes of the game.

Speaking about Cancelo’s performance after the game, Kimmich told Sky Sports Germany: ‘He has amazing quality – you can see the quality he brings to the pitch. I hope that we will have fun with him.’
While, teenage sensation Musiala added: ‘Everyone can see the quality he [Cancelo] has – he’s a great technical player. We’re happy he’s here [at Bayern Munich].’
Cancelo received such praise despite not playing the entire game. He made way for Alphonso Davies in the 71st minute after a promising start to his career in Germany.
Bayern Munich went on to win the match 4-0 to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, thanks to further goals from Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sane and Davies.
However, it seems as though Cancelo is on the right track to helping Bayern Munich claim more titles.
Upon signing for the German champions, Cancelo said: ‘Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world. I know this team lives for titles.
‘It’s enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players in a team. I’m also driven by the hunger for success. I’ll give my best for Bayern.’
