Barcelona ‘make De Jong decision’ that could change everything at Man Utd

Man Utd fans protest outside Old Trafford

Manchester United could be about to turn all their attention on signing Frenkie de Jong after reports emerged suggesting that Barcelona are willing to let go of their star midfielder this summer if the price is right.

According to Spanish publication Sport, an exceptional offer for De Jong may persuade them to let the Dutchman go as they look to level their books in order to comply with financial fair play rules. United attempted to sign De Jong last summer for £71million but Barca refused to let him go.

De Jong was also very keen to stay at the Nou Camp and snubbed previous approaches made by the Red Devils. But Erik ten Hag hasn’t given up hope and still maintains a keen interest in his fellow countryman.

The latest developments on De Jong’s situation will likely motivate Ten Hag to enquire about the player’s availability. It is thought that he holds De Jong in the highest regard and classes him as a ‘dream signing’.

But Ten Hag will have to do a lot of persuading if he wants to acquire the 26-year-old’s services as he remains set on staying at Barca. He told Voetbal International: “That has been clear to me, also last summer when things were restless for a while.

“I always knew that I wanted to stay at Barcelona. That’s why it wasn’t so stressful for me last summer.

“Also, I had just signed a contract extension [in 2020] so I always felt that I was in control and able to decide for myself. That’s why I didn’t bother [worrying about it]. I feel good at Barcelona and assume that I will still be playing here next season.”

United are looking to overhaul their central midfield this summer and De Jong would certainly be a welcome additive. The club remains in hot pursuit of Mason Mount despite several knock backs from Chelsea.

Their latest offer was reportedly worth £50m plus £5m in add-ons. Chelsea are said to have made a counter-offer of £58m plus an additional £7m in add-ons and are awaiting United’s response.
