Barcelona face more FFP misery as they are 'fined up to £705,000'

Barcelona face more FFP misery as the Catalan giants are ‘fined up to £705,000 after exceeding salary limit with the signings of Dani Alves and Andreas Christensen, and renewing Ronald Araujo’s contract’

  • Barcelona sanctioned over signings of Dani Alves and Andreas Christiensen
  • Although bought on free transfers, the signings now exceed the salary limits
  • Also sanctioned for renewal of Ronald Araujo’s contract, totalling fines to £705k
  • Comes after Barca president Joan Laporta called for more flexible FFP rules

Barcelona are facing more Financial Fair Play misery after the club were reportedly hit with three sanctions totalling almost £705,000.

The Catalan giants have found themselves in trouble over exceeding the salary limits with the signings of Dani Alves and Andreas Christensen – and the renewal of Ronald Araujo’s contract.

The club have appealed all three sanctions imposed on them from 2021-22 before the RFEF UEFA license second instance committee, according to ARA.

The re-signing of Dani Alves is one transfer that has got the club in trouble because they have exceeded the salary limits

In total, the three sanctions amount to almost €800,000 (£705k), in another damaging blow to the club.

In November, Sportsmail reported that Barcelona president Joan Laporta was trying to convince LaLiga to be more flexible with their FFP rules after admitting his club could not make any signings in January.

The Catalan giants spent over £130m to improve Xavi’s side during the summer, which included the arrival of Robert Lewandowski.

But their push for a first title since 2019 appeared to have taken a dent after Laporta claimed they can’t bring anyone through the door in January because of the current financial restrictions.

Andreas Christensen was also brought to the Nou Camp on a free transfer the club are being sanctioned over his wages

He told reporters at the time: ‘We had to use some levers, which were economic operations that saved the club from ruin, and now the club is in economic recovery.

‘It is now healthy with an expected income of €1.225b (£1bn) and a profit also budgeted for €274m (£240m).

‘But, despite that, according to the rules of the financial fair play of the Spanish league, we cannot sign.’

The third sanction was due to the renewal of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo’s contract

To offset losses and comply with LaLiga’s financial fair play rules, the club sold 25 per cent of their domestic television rights and a 49 per cent stake in Barca Studios for more than €700m (£609m).

This allowed them to strengthen in the summer with the likes of Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Raphinha.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas outlined the problems to Mundo Deportivo. ‘The levers have worked for them this season but not for the next one,’ he said.

‘They have to reduce salary mass, they cannot continue with more than €500m (£436m).’

Barcelona are trying to force some club legends to leave as soon as possible to help repair their finances.

Gerard Pique has recently retired while the likes of Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets could leave the club at the end of the season.
