Baffling ‘obese Reece James’ claim debunked by Chelsea star’s chiselled gym snap

Bizarre claims that Reece James is overweight were sensationally debunked when a photo of the Chelsea star showing off his rippling abdominals emerged on social media.

Following Chelsea's £31m capture of highly-rated Lyon full back Malo Gusto over the weekend, a football fan account on Twitter suggested the 19-year-old was being brought in as James' long-term replacement, citing the England international's "injury history and obesity" as "concerning".

The tweet was roundly mocked with dozens of users posting pictures of the defender to prove that accusations of weight problems had absolutely no merit.

"Have you actually seen Reece James? If that's obese then I want to be obese," one fan tweeted in response.

"Reece James obese? What are you talking about you idiot," said another. A third added: "I don't understand some football fans. They see someone with muscle and call them fat. Remember when y’all said Lukaku was fat?"

James isn't the first Blues star to get baffling saddled with the 'overweight' tag. Throughout his career, rival fans continually referred to Frank Lampard as 'Fat Frank', in spite of the Chelsea and England legend's unmistakably normal physique.

James has been almost completely out of action since October following back-to-back knee injuries, the first of which saw him miss out on a place at the World Cup.

Chelsea's form dipped alarmingly as soon as he was sidelined, just as it did last season, demonstrating the 23-year-old's importance to Graham Potter's side.

James has racked over 130 appearances for the Blues having broken into the first team back in 2019 following a successive season on loan at Wigan, and played a starring role in Chelsea's Champions League-winning run in 2021. In September last year he signed a new bumper contract, committing himself to the club until 2028.
