Barcelona’s ears will have pricked up after AZ Alkmaar Under 19 star Mexx Meerdink outlined his aspirations to play for the Catalan giants in the future. 

The Dutch youngster starred as his side lifted the UEFA Youth League trophy on Monday night with a thumping 5-0 win over Hadjuk Split U19. 

Meerdink scored twice and assisted another in a dazzling first half display, with his boss seeing fit to take him off after the break so comfortable were the Eredivisie side in the tie. 

The brace in the showpiece clash took the 19-year-old’s tally for the tournament to nine goals from just six games, as well as two assists, with the centre forward also captaining his side against Frankfurt earlier in the competition.

Barcelona are known throughout the game as one of the best sides for developing youngsters, and Meerdink is clearly eager to become the latest of a long line of young talent.

‘The club in which I would like to play? Barcelona,’ he said, as per Khalid & Sophie (via Sport).

The Blaugrana were also given a front row ticket to his abilities, with Meerdink scoring against them in an earlier round, although the fact he repeated the feat against Real Madrid will be some comfort. 

The forward has also made a foray into the senior side at Alkmaar, with four outings in the Eredivisie and two in the Europa Conference League, although he is yet to score or assist. 

In the latter competition, the 19-year-old showcased a temperament and maturity perhaps beyond his years by scoring the final penalty in his side’s last-eight penalty shoot-out win over Anderlecht, to seal a victory against the Belgian club. 

Sport reports that he is a player on the radar of Xavi’s side, although he is not alone in a side that romped to UEFA Youth League success. 

Alkmaar U19 forwards Jayden Adda and Ernest Poku are also thought to have piqued the interest of several clubs, and are set for bright futures in the game.
