Avram Glazer refused to definitely confirm Manchester United were for sale because the Americans are ‘covering all eventualities’, football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes. It emerged at the end of last month they were willing to cash in on the Red Devils. So far, however, it appears there’s no clear frontrunner when it comes to taking them over.
Manchester United have been ruled by the Glazers ever since 2005, when they purchased the club for a massive £750million.
The trophies initially kept coming in the years that followed, with Sir Alex Ferguson steering the club to five Premier League titles as well as the Champions League trophy in the aftermath.
But silverware has dried up ever since the Scot walked away and, now, the Glazers have put the club on the market.
Avram did, however, stop short of confirming this last month. When asked about United’s situation, he said: “It’s not necessarily a sale, it’s a process and we’re going forward with the process, so we’ll see what happens.”
When quizzed further, he said: “I’m here to really watch the World Cup but I appreciate your interest.

“That’s the update, it’s the process and the process is proceeding.”
Now, football finance expert Maguire has expressed a belief Avram and the rest of the Glazers are ‘covering all eventualities’ so that they don’t ‘back themselves into a corner’.
“You can see the rationale from Avram Glazer here,” he told Football Insider.
“Ideally, the Glazers would want a full sale because they can get a higher price that way.
“The noises that are coming out of Anfield is that it is going to be a partial sale of 10 to 15 per cent. I think the Glazers are therefore covering all eventualities.

“What the Glazers don’t want to do is back themselves into a corner by saying it is going to be a full sale.
“If they did that, they might not get the type of prices that they are going to justify on a fundamental financial analysis.”
In a statement last month, the Glazers admitted plans were in place for the future of United.
“The strength of Manchester United rests on the passion and loyalty of our global community of 1.1 billion fans and followers,” he said.
“As we seek to continue building on the Club’s history of success, the Board has authorised a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives.

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximises the significant growth opportunities available to the Club today and in the future.
“Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”
Erik ten Hag recently confirmed he’d talked with the United hierarchy about a possible takeover.
“My information is that it will only be good things because there will be more investment possible,” he said.
“We spoke about the culture we want, we spoke about objectives, goals and the culture and he [Arnold] confirmed it won’t change, it will be even better because more money will become available for this project.”
When asked if United needed investment to keep pace with their rivals, the Dutchman added: “Newcastle are coming, even West Ham, maybe not now in the table but they have huge investment.
“You can quickly count seven or eight clubs that can compete in this league.
“It’s also about strategy not just money.
“But it’s clear that when you don’t have the right players and quality players you will not be successful and achieve the targets you set.”
