Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has explained Thiago Silva’s role in creating his first Blues goal went beyond his assist. Aubameyang struck on his full Premier League debut for the West Londoners in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.
The 33-year-old – a summer signing from Barcelona – struck the equaliser when Silva knocked down Reece James’ crossfield pass. Aubameyang struck a half-volley beyond Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita after Odsonne Edouard had opened the scoring.
Silva had actually told Aubameyang where to make his run before James’ pass was even made, the former Arsenal striker has now revealed. The centre-back had told his team-mate to move inside defender Joel Ward.
“Thiago Silva actually told me to go inside the defender because he thought Reece was going to play the pass long so I went inside,” Aubameyang told journalists after the game. “I turned my body and I used the defender a little bit to create some space and then I managed to find the corner.”
JUST IN: Chelsea boss Graham Potter delivers Thiago Silva red card verdict
Palace boss Patrick Vieira felt Silva should have been sent off shortly before setting up Aubameyang. The Brazilian slipped and prevented Jordan Ayew bearing down on goal by hitting the ball away with his hand.
Referee Chris Kavanagh deemed Ayew to have been too far from goal and that there was adequate cover from other Chelsea defenders. He opted to show Silva just a yellow card.
“With Thiago, it’s something I don’t want to talk about. It’s difficult for me to understand it, to accept it, so it’s better sometimes to be quiet and not talk about it,” former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Vieira said in his post-match press conference.

“I believe the referee got it wrong and if I say what I think, I will be in trouble. So I’d rather not talk about it.
“I don’t want to talk about it because I don’t understand that decision and I don’t want to talk about it. There is a referee, there is a VAR and they are making decisions and we just move on.”
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher came off the bench to score a stunning winner against a club for whom he starred on loan last season. The England ace turned on the edge of the box and curled a wonderful effort beyond Guaita.
