Aubameyang set to return to Chelsea's match day squad
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set for a return to Chelsea’s match day squad for their trip to Tottenham, with Graham Potter searching for goals after the Blues’ recent attacking struggles
- Chelsea have scored just four league goals in 2023 amid a poor run of form
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is expected to return to their squad on Sunday
- Graham Potter’s side face London rivals Tottenham away with a 13:30 kick off
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set for a return to the Chelsea squad for their trip to Tottenham on Sunday, Sportsmail understands.
The striker has been out-of-favour at Stamford Bridge in recent weeks, but appears to be coming back into the fray amid the Blues’ recent struggles in front of goal.
He was left at home for Chelsea’s recent trip to his old side Borussia Dortmund, who won the tie 1-0.
Aubameyang has been restricted to just 11 league games this season and has only managed one goal, but does have a goal scoring history in the Premier League after scoring 92 goals for Arsenal.
Graham Potter’s side have scored just four goals in eight league games this year, and will be keen for a return to form against London rivals Spurs.
The Blues face Tottenham on Sunday in desperate need of a win to help resurrect their season
A win for the North London side would put them 14 points above Chelsea in the league, while a Blues win would start to lead them back up the table.
Potter dropped a hint the Gabon international may return earlier this week, when he said Aubameyang was ‘competing for a place’ and had shown a ‘good response’ to Chelsea’s struggles.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, the manager called for: ‘a strong performance. We need three points. It’s a game we’re looking forward too. Training and response been really good.
‘We’ve spoken about it with individuals and as a group as to how to attack against Tottenham. They are a team that don’t give much away, defend deep, we’ll have to think about that.’
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte’s usual touchline position will be taken by his assistant Christian Stellini on Sunday as Conte continues to recover from an operation.
Despite Chelsea’s disastrous recent form, Stellini encouraged patience with Potter, as he said: ‘The result sometimes depends not on how better you are at your job or how you are working well but maybe different team needs more time. It depends.
‘Sometimes you have to be patient. You have to wait for the right moment, the result arrives also if you are not expecting.
‘Last season we struggled a lot until February but after that the team changed. It is not every time the same, the coach has to wait for the team to play and continue to work and be confident in his job.’
