Atletico Madrid players were involved in a furious bust-up in their opening La Liga game against Celta de Vigo.

The champions started their title defence with a 2-1 win over the Galician side, with Angel Correa getting both of their goals.

Diego Simeone’s side will look to capitalise on the financial struggles of rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid to secure back-to-back honours.

Footage has emerged, though, of their campaign getting started with a sting in the tail – and forward Luis Suarez was at the heart of it.

In the clip, the match is in stoppage time with the three points set to return to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Four minutes into the seven stoppage-time minutes, the Uruguayan looks for ahead of him in a late counter-attack.

But the 34-year-old is clipped by Hugo Mallo, going down to the floor screaming and holding his right calf as his team-mate’s effort is saved.

The referee stops the game for a physio to treat Suarez – just as Celta were on a counter-attack of their own looking for an equaliser.

This leaves the home side furious, with their No.2 receiving a yellow card for his tackle.

Atletico’s No.9 tries to get up to speak to the referee but falls down again, being circled by his team-mates.

Mallo then piles in to make his feelings felt with the forward – but his anger is met by full-back Mario Hermoso, who shoves the defender.

A full-on brawl then follows as the Atletico defender is grabbed around the neck by Iago Aspas before both benches are on the pitch.

All of this happens as Mallo is given a red card, walking off before attempting to launch himself at another Atletico player.

He was then joined down the tunnel by Hermoso for his role in the brawl – all of this happening with Suarez still on the ground.

Nine yellow cards, including the two for the Celta defender’s red card, and one straight were handed out in the La Liga match, which sees Atletico third in the table.
