Atletico Madrid hero Luis Suarez breaks down in tears after Barcelona redemption
Atletico Madrid’s La Liga-winning hero Luis Suarez was filmed breaking down in tears after securing redemption from his Barcelona exit.
The Uruguayan was released in September after Ronald Koeman said the forward was surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.
But their Spanish rivals snapped up the opportunity to sign the man who scored 198 goals in 283 goals, adding 22 more to his tally this season.
And his most important goal of the campaign came against Real Valladolid, running onto a loose pass after 67 minutes to clinch a comeback 2-1 victory.
While the rest of the team celebrated winning the league for the first time in seven years, though, the occasion got to Suarez at full time.
The Uruguayan was filmed speaking to someone on his phone, sitting on the pitch while tears streamed down his face.
He rubs them away while voices at the other end of the line celebrate his role in securing the La Liga title.
Suarez also spoke about his exit from Barcelona, with the 34-year-old saying in his post-match interview: “I am delighted the way Atletico have appreciated me and given me the chance to keep showing I can perform on this stage.
“I thank them for trusting in me, a lot of people have suffered with me, my wife, my children.
"I have been playing football for many years and this is the year my family and I have suffered the most. It is an amazing feeling to have performed on the final day of the season.
"My work is to help the team and pay them back by scoring goals.
“Sometimes it is necessary to push even harder but Atletico is a huge club and we have shown it this season – we have been the most regular performer and that is why we are the champions now."
Suarez had won 10 major honours at the Nou Camp when he was shown the door by Barcelona, seeing him break down in tears at his final press conference last September.
