‘We’re getting back to seeing the Griezmann we had before’: Diego Simeone heaps praise on his star striker after he inspired Atletico Madrid to victory at Real Betis after completing £21m permanent return from Barcelona

  • Antoine Griezmann scored two goals for his side as they beat Real Betis 2-1
  • The French striker rejoined Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal following a loan
  • Atletico boss Diego Simeone has praised the striker for his recent performances
  • Simeone has said that Atletico are now ‘seeing the Griezmann who left’ the club

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has heaped praise on striker Antoine Griezmann following his performances since rejoining the club on a permanent deal.

The French striker left Atletico to join LaLiga rivals Barcelona in 2019, but following an underwhelming stay at the Nou Camp, Griezmann returned to his former club on loan.

After talks with Griezmann’s parent club, Atletico recently made the deal permanent at a cut-throat price and there has been an uptick in the 31-year-old’s output – as seen with a brace against Real Betis.

After the important 2-1 win away at Betis, Simeone spoke positively on his star striker’s performance.

Speaking to Diario AS, Simeone said: ‘I am very happy for Griezmann as he wants to be here at Atletico.

‘We’re seeing the Griezmann who left. Or maybe from the six month before he left, as his last six months were not good.’

With three goals and two assists in his last four LaLiga games, it appears that the versatile forward may be getting back to his best in an Atletico shirt.

Simeone continued: ‘We’re getting back to seeing the Griezmann we had before.

‘He’s a leader, and we need leaders. He’s finding his place, and his teammates understand him.’

Atletico have been on good form in recent games as they look to close the gap on Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table.

Los Colchoneros will also need to improve their results in the Champions League as they currently sit third in their group and are on the brink of an early exit from the competition.

Griezmann will be key if his side are to progress up the table in LaLiga, and in Europe, and Atletico fans will be hoping his good form continues.
