United hope to wrap up the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea next week and are in talks with Inter Milan to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana.

With their spending power limited this summer, the Premier League side have been priced out of moves for Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen with both Tottenham and Napoli valuing the strikers in the excess of £100m.

20-year-old Hojlund is another option under serious consideration with the Denmark international thought to be keen to link up with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Latest reports from Corriere dello Sport claim United have seen their opening bid of £31m rejected by Atlanta, who signed Hojlund from Sturm Graz just last summer for £15m.

However, the report claims Atalanta will cash in if they receive a bid in the region of £34m to £39m.

Juventus are also monitoring the Dane’s situation.

Hojlund scored nine times in 32 appearances in his first season in Serie A and recently welcomed talk of a summer move to Old Trafford.

‘It is a huge club, so I must have done something right if it’s rumoured they want me. We have to see what happens,’ he said.

‘As you see and hear, I imagine a lot could happen to quite a few strikers this summer, as many clubs are looking for a no9.

‘Something will definitely happen there, and then we’ll have to wait and see if I am included in it.

‘I am very happy to be with Atalanta and we have qualified for Europe. I have found myself in a really good place here, so now we have to wait and see.’

United have also been credited with interest in Porto striker Mehdi Taremi as a possible low-cost option.
