Aston Villa are edging closer to securing the services of Steven Gerrard as their new boss with the club now completing the paperwork for his £3million compensation fee. The Midlands club are now believed to be on the verge of appointing the former Liverpool captain with both his and his staff’s contracts now on the table at Villa Park.
Rangers gave the Premier League side permission to speak with Gerrard on Wednesday as he emerged as the frontrunner for the job.
Gerrard was then spotted getting off a train in London, where it’s believed he met with Villa chiefs.
The club have moved quickly to pursue their top managerial target after deciding to sack Dean Smith last Sunday.
The decision was made in the aftermath of Friday’s 1-0 loss on the road at Southampton, their fifth straight defeat in the Premier League.
According to Fabrizio Romano, it’s now paperwork time between Villa and Gerrard.
It’s understood that Villa are now completing the relevant paperwork to sign off the £3m compensation fee to Rangers.
The former England midfielder will then sign a two-and-a-half year deal at Villa Park.
Michael Beale and Gary McAlister are set to form part of his backroom staff, following him from Ibrox.
