Aston Villa fear Tyrone Mings has suffered serious damage to his knee with the defender facing a lengthy absence that adds to the club’s mounting injury crisis.
The England centre-back was carried off on a stretcher after 31 minutes and became the fourth key first-team player out of action, with Alex Moreno, Jacob Ramsey and Emiliano Buendia also on the sidelines.
They were due to learn more on Mings’ injury on Sunday.
Buendia damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in training at the end of last week, while Moreno had hamstring surgery during the summer and Ramsey broke a bone in his foot while playing for England in the European Under-21 Championships in June. The midfielder is likely to be out for at least another month.

Villa’s performance in the second half at St James’ Park appeared to be influenced by the absence of Mings, a hugely influential figure within the Villa squad and a key man for manager Unai Emery.
Villa have already signed Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans since the end of last season and the injuries to Buendia and Mings may alter their transfer plans for the remainder of the campaign.
They are believed to have been in discussions with Turkish giants Galatasaray for Nicolo Zaniolo, with the exact nature of the deal for the Italian attacker still to be determined.
