Arsene Wenger puts Richard Keys in his place in "simple" Harry Kane debate

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger put Richard Keys in his place after the presenter asked why Manchester City didn’t make a final push to sign Harry Kane last year.

The former Sky Sports anchor said that he did not understand why the Premier League champions opted to sign Jack Grealish for £100m when they could have put in that little bit extra and signed Tottenham forward Kane instead. But Wenger, when pressed by Keys, said that the answer was “simple.”

“I would say until now Grealish didn’t have the impact that you expected him to have at Manchester City," the 72-year-old said on beIN. "He’s not always a regular player. I would say they are, luckily, in a position where they can do both. They can spend £100m on Grealish and £100m more on Kane. Why didn’t they? The answer is really simple. Tottenham refused to sell Harry Kane.

“Despite the fact that they have a lot of money, they put prices on everything. It’s very rationally managed. If they decided the maximum they will put in was £100m, then they did it. And I respect that. If they think like you (Richard Keys) think, then you finish bankrupt.”

Last summer Man City made a well-documented move for Kane but Spurs turned down their £125million bid for the 28-year-old striker. Instead, Pep Guardiola's side turned to Aston Villa’s Grealish and broke the British transfer record – around £100m – in bringing him to the Etihad.

City have enjoyed another superb season in the Premier League, even though this time around they have been without an out-and-out striker. Sergio Aguero joined Barcelona over the summer and the Premier League side failed to bring in anyone as a replacement.

Grealish has been fine but it’s thought that City really could have stolen the title away from Liverpool if they had brought in a marquee summer signing to bolster the frontline. Kane has scored 22 times this season for Spurs and has been one of the standout performers of 2022. His contract is up in north London in 2024.
