Arsenal’s ‘new Campbell’ Walters made £8,800 in one day on Fortnite

Arsenal starlet Reuell Walters has made his mark in the world of gaming and is next hoping to do so in football, having broken into the Gunners’ first-team squad. The 18-year-old is yet to make his debut but will hope that he can get the chance under Mikel Arteta – who has not been afraid to put his faith in the young contingent in north London.

Walters can play both right-back and centre-back, having impressed the coaching staff at London Colney on a pre-season trip to the US, while also starring for Jack Wilshere’s under-18s team.

He has been training with the first team this week in the build-up to their trip to West Ham, perhaps as a Plan B to Ben White with Takehiro Tomiyasu out for the remainder of the season.

Walters has drawn comparisons to Sol Campbell in his early career, having also opted to leave Tottenham and move across north London to Arsenal. As a youngster, his father admitted to The Athletic that his son felt “lost” at Spurs and plans were put in motion for him to leave their academy, with a host of Premier League clubs interested but ultimately he chose the Gunners – after a trial at Manchester United.

His progression has seen the teenager named on the bench away to Sporting CP as well as against Crystal Palace, Leeds and Liverpool. Arsenal’s injury crisis at the back may come at a time when Walters can make his mark on the team, after previously doing so in Fortnite.

In 2019, a 15-year-old Walters got an email from EpicGames, the makers of the game which said he had made $20 (£16) after building a map called RJW’s BoxPVP. Players can upload maps they have made for the community to use, often adding their creator code which allows content creators to earn a commission when gamers buy items in the store with their V-Bucks.

As his map saw its popularity rise, Walters asked his parents for their bank details – a request which was shut down as they felt that their son was going to be scammed.

However, money kept coming in and after a PayPal account was set up and Walters’ map had been played by 250 million people around the world in one week – in just one night he made $11,000 (£8,800).

Now he is aiming to get the nod from Arteta to feature in the senior team, as the England under-19 international has been made to watch from the bench as Arsenal have eight games remaining to beat out Manchester City for their first league title since 2004 in a remarkable turnaround from their fifth-placed finish last campaign.
