Arsenal’s ‘exploratory transfer conversations’ can ruin Liverpool plan

Arsenal may be set to use their promising season under Mikel Arteta in their bid to outdo both Chelsea and Liverpool in the summer transfer window. Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City in the week has put them on the backfoot now in the title race.

All is still not lost with City still needing to win their remaining seven matches to keep Arsenal at bay. But the form of Pep Guardiola’s side suggests Arsenal will have their cut out in hoping for a slip up from their rivals.

No matter what happens now, the season will undoubtedly be seen as a success for an Arsenal team that hadn’t finished inside the top four since 2016. But this campaign will also raise expectations among supporters with pressure on the board to back Arteta in the transfer market.

According to the Telegraph, Arteta is hoping to bring in three major signings to bolster his current squad. Midfield is the priority with both Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice regarded as top targets.

But Arsenal are also said to have held ‘exploratory conversations’ about a move for Mason Mount. The Chelsea star is being strongly linked with a move to Liverpool as the Blues fail to make progress on contract talks.

For Chelsea, they still reportedly want to keep Mount with Frank Lampard making it clear that he feels the club should make plans around the England international. Liverpool clearly see the value in signing Mount too with Jurgen Klopp desperate for most dynamism in midfield.

But neither club will be able to offer Mount Champions League football from next season while Arsenal can for the first time in a few years. That could prove crucial for the Gunners in transfer talks with other targets, but even more so with Mount.

Chelsea look set to not play any part in a European competition next year, limiting the opportunities for Mount to play even further. Liverpool will likely secure a place in the Europa League on current form, but Arsenal may hold an advantage if they want to beat their rivals to the signing of Mount.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool will fancy their chances at improving next year, but Arsenal’s success should be enough to put them ahead of their rivals on the negotiating table.
