Arsenal transfer expert Edu has four targets that can fix Jurrien Timber problem
Arsenal: Arteta admits Arsenal could dip back in market after Jurrien Timber injury
Arsenal new signing Jurrien Timber suffered a nightmare Premier League debut as he suffered a knee injury that the club have confirmed will rule him out for a lengthy period, likely to be the entire season after undergoing surgery. Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu could sign a replacement for the defender before the transfer window closes. Express Sport looks at four players Arsenal could sign to cover Timber’s long-term injury.
Ivan Fresneda
Arsenal attempted to sign Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda in January, but after he opted to see out the season with the Spanish side the Gunners moved on to Timber and instead splashed out £38.5million to sign the Ajax star.
Edu could return for the 18-year-old who is able to invert from right-back similarly to Timber and Thomas Partey this season, though are likely to face competition from Barcelona for his signature.
Fresneda could be available for a bargain price this summer, however, as Valladolid’s relegation from La Liga ensured that his release clause dropped to £17.2m – a fee Arsenal could pay for a future prospect who can help add strength in depth this season.

Timothy Castagne
Leicester man Timothy Castagne is another defender who can play in multiple positions that Arsenal have been linked with this summer, as RMC Sport claimed in June that negotiations had been opened between the two clubs over the Belgium international – before the Gunners went and signed Timber.
Castagne would likely be available for a modest price following Leicester’s relegation, while Fulham are also interested in the 27-year-old but are yet to meet his valuation according to the Daily Mail, leaving Arsenal with an opportunity to move ahead for the defender.

Mohamed Simakan
Should Arsenal prefer a defender that can cover at centre-back as Timber was able to, RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan could be the option to look at. Fabrizio Romano detailed that the French defender was on the Gunners’ list of targets after Timber’s injury and he was the club’s ‘Plan B’ earlier in the window if they were unable to get a deal for Timber over the line.
The 23-year-old would likely be one of the more costly names on the shortlist, valued at around £35m, as his arrival could depend on outgoings such as Kieran Tierney, Folarin Balogun and Nuno Tavares.
Joao Cancelo
Arsenal could look to Manchester City once again after pinching Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last year, by putting an end to Joao Cancelo’s miserable last few months at the Etihad. The Gunners have been credited with interest in the Portugal international previously this summer, who looks set to part ways with Pep Guardiola.
After being cast out on loan to Bayern Munich in January, Cancelo returned to Manchester but has been left out of all three of their squads so far this season – with Barcelona the likeliest candidate for his signature but Arsenal could step in and hijack the deal in order to provide further flexibility for Arteta.
