Arsenal are reportedly set to make a move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard if Alexandre Lacazette leaves the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Lacazette has failed to provide the goals expected of an elite striker since joining from Lyon for a fee in the region of £47million in the summer of 2017.
The Frenchman has not scored more than 13 league goals since his first season in the Premier League, well under what strikers at other clubs fighting for a European place have managed.
He had started the season well, scoring in three successive games at the beginning of the campaign, but following April’s draw with Fulham, he was restricted to substitute appearances.
The failure to ever really hit a good run of form in front of goal has led to the 29-year-old being linked with a move away this summer.
It appears that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is already lining up replacements for Lacazette, with Edouard moving to the top of the shopping list.
The Frenchman has starred for Celtic since joining the club from PSG, scoring 22 goals this season despite what has been a disappointing campaign for the Scottish Premiership side.
The 23-year-old’s most successful season came last year, when he hit 21 goals and notched 12 assists in 27 games to fire Celtic to the league title.
That has attracted the eye of several Premier League clubs, with The Sun reporting that Arsenal’s interest is “dependent” on Lacazette’s future.
But they are facing competition from two other English sides, with Brighton and Leicester City also joining the race to sign him.
Edouard’s contract is entering its final year, which means he will be available for a fee between £15m and £20m in this summer’s transfer window.
Arsenal could potentially offer the Frenchman regular starting minutes if Lacazette does depart.
While that would not appear to be the case if he moved to Leicester, he would have the opportunity to link back up with former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
Brighton are also understood to be “desperate” to sign him and believe that their offer of substantial playing time could be enough to convince Edouard to move to the AMEX.
