Arsenal star playing second fiddle makes complaint admission to Arteta
Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner has conceded that he can’t feel hard done by over the fact he is sitting on the bench due to the brilliant form of Aaron Ramsdale. The American shot-stopper joined the Gunners last summer, however, he has struggled for minutes with Ramsdale continuing to stamp his authority between the sticks.
Turner has made just six appearances for Arsenal – all in cup competitions – since joining from MLS side New England Revolution last year. But instead of sitting glum on the bench, the New Jersey native has been full of praise for both Arteta and Ramsdale.
Speaking about Arteta and his way with players, the 28-year-old told CBS: “He is a super respectful person. He has love not only for the players but also their families and their wives and kids. He goes up to them after games, he shakes their hand, looks them in the eye and gives them a hug and a kiss.
“It makes your family feel a part of the success as well. He’s done a great job of creating a [positive] atmosphere. I’m not the type of person who takes their job lightly. I want to be playing every single chance I can get.
“I show up to training with the right mentality. I work really, really hard to improve in the areas I need to. I’m trying to compete to get onto the field. I think Aaron Ramsdale and I have become better goalkeepers from challenging each other.
“Obviously, he is having a great season and is making big saves in big moments. I can’t really complain with where I stand but I am working really, really hard. I hold him accountable and he holds me accountable. We’ve been developing a close relationship which has pushed us both forward.”
Turner’s chance in goal has been dampened by the fact that Ramsdale has enjoyed his finest season to date. The England goalkeeper has recorded 12 clean sheets so far, most notably against Liverpool last Sunday to ensure Arsenal walked away with a point from Anfield.
Earlier this year, United States goalkeeping icon and New England Revolution manager Brad Friedel urged Turner to leave north London this summer to look for first-team football. The 51-year-old said: “When I wasn’t playing consistently when I was at Liverpool I had to get out. Even though I loved the club and it was the team I supported, I had to leave for my career.
“Look at Matt’s competition for the national team spot. He was the number one then and he’s gone all this time without playing, but Zack Steffen, who wasn’t getting a game at Manchester City, is now playing well for Middlesbrough.
“I think that Matt, no matter what, even though Arsenal are an incredible club, has to find consistent football somewhere. This season, fine, but if he’s not going to be the number one he has got to go.”
