Arsenal aren’t in the mix to sign Donny van de Beek from Manchester United, it has been claimed. However, while that’s the case, Mikel Arteta is pushing for the arrival of a new midfielder. And several names have been linked with the summer transfer window currently open again.

Arsenal are primed to lose Granit Xhaka to Roma, with the Switzerland international on the verge of leaving the Emirates Stadium after five years in north London.

And with that the case, Van de Beek has been linked with a move.

Big things were expected of the Netherlands international when Manchester United snapped him up from Ajax a year ago, paying £40million to bring him to Old Trafford.

But the 24-year-old experienced a chastening first year in England, spending the majority of the season being stuck behind Bruno Fernandes in the club’s pecking order.

With Van de Beek toiling, talk of a potential move to Arsenal has arisen.

But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Gunners have no interest in the Dutchman – but that Arteta is pushing for the signing of a midfielder.

“There are no talks between Arsenal, Manchester United or player agents for Donny van de Beek,” Romano said on Twitter.

“Arsenal will sign a new midfielder, for sure – but there’s nothing going on for van de Beek as of today. There are other names in the list as priorities.”

Van de Beek managed just two goal involvements from 19 Premier League matches last term, only clocking up 511 minutes of action.

Overall he made 36 appearances across all competitions, though the majority came as a substitute.

United had originally intended to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa 12 months ago, with Solskjaer believing the Aston Villa star had all the attributes to be a huge hit.

But with Jadon Sancho their priority target at the time, Van de Beek was instead signed from Ajax as a cheaper alternative.

He was an unused substitute in the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal, not even coming on for the dreaded penalty shootout.

And things have gone from bad to worse for the midfielder after he was ruled out of Euro 2020 through injury, robbing him of the chance to appear in the tournament.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright said last year that Van de Beek should have chosen a move to the Emirates instead, admitting he’s a huge admirer of the midfielder.

“Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken,” Wright said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show.

“When you look at [Paul] Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

“So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen, because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

“Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United in time because he’s a quality player.

“But is he what they need right now?”

After withdrawing from Euro 2020, the United star admitted he’d be cheering his country on.

“As you may have already learned, I unfortunately had to leave the team due to a groin injury,” he said.

“A big disappointment, especially because it would be my first European Championship and unfortunately I can’t be there now.

“I want to thank you for all the sweet messages I have received, it means a lot to me. I want to wish the players, the staff, and last but not least the fans a great European Championship.”

Arsenal and United have struck several transfer deals in recent years.

Danny Welbeck was allowed to leave Old Trafford for north London back in the summer transfer window of 2014 after being deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal.

And Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan exchanged places in a swap deal back in January 2018.
