Arsenal ‘see new £70m Caicedo bid rejected’ despite star’s desperation to go

Arsenal have had a second bid for Moises Caicedo rejected by Brighton despite the midfielder's desperation to quit the Amex Stadium this month.

The Gunners are going all out for the young Ecuadorian, but only have two days left before the transfer window slams shut. After seeing their initial £60m bid turned down on Thursday, Arsenal submitted an improved offer of £70m over the weekend, only to see that rejected as well.

Brighton insist Caicedo won't be allowed to leave until the summer, though there's belief within Arsenal's camp that a sizeable enough offer will be able to tempt the Seagulls to the negotiating table in the coming days.

Chelsea are also keen on Caicedo, and had a verbal offer of £55m knocked back last week, but it appears the club is focusing on landing Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez instead, which opens the door for Arsenal.

Amid all the interest, Caicedo appeared to hand in a transfer request on Friday after releasing a statement on Instagram urging the club to let him leave and telling supporters: "I hope [you] can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity."

The 21-year-old was subsequently left out of Brighton's FA Cup fourth round victory over Liverpool on Sunday and ordered to stay away from the club's training base until the issue was resolved.

Mikel Arteta's side are keen to add reinforcements amid the club's first genuine title push in over a decade.

They lost out on Mykhailo Mudryk after seeing their deal for the Ukrainian hijacked by Chelsea, but have since gone on to sign Caicedo's former Brighton team-mate Leandro Trossard, as well as Polish defender Jakub Kiwior.
