Arsenal have agreed terms with New England Revolution over the summer transfer of goalkeeper Matt Turner. The Gunners had shown a strong interest in the January window, and now appear to have hauled the deal over the line with an undisclosed fee set to be paid, pending the completion of a medical.

Turner’s eventual arrival will come as positive news for Gunners fans, who watched their club miss out on successive targets last month.

Next season, boss Mikel Arteta is expected to need cover for Bernd Leno, who is likely to seek an exit after falling behind Aaron Ramsdale in the pecking order.

And Turner could provide exactly that, scooping up the 2021 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award and featuring regularly for the United States’ national team.

At 27-years-old, Turner is yet to venture out of his homeland during a playing career which took a while to get going, and the prospect of Premier League football appeared too good to turn down.

A statement from his current club, New England Revolution, read: “The New England Revolution have agreed to terms for goalkeeper Matt Turner to join Arsenal of the English Premier League in a summer transfer for an undisclosed fee pending completion of a medical.

“Turner, the 2021 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, is expected to join Arsenal in late June 2022, allowing the United States international to remain with New England through the entirety of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League campaign and nearly half of the 2022 MLS regular season.

“Further information will be shared when the transfer is completed.”

It is the second bit of recent MLS transfer business conducted by the Gunners, after they picked up 23-year-old Auston Trusty on deadline day.

That deal went through as a January transfer, but the defender has returned to Colorado Rapids on loan until the end of the Premier League campaign.

That deal went through as a January transfer, but the defender has returned to Colorado Rapids on loan until the end of the Premier League campaign.

Although the price for both deals are not known for certain, The Sun claim that Turner will set the Gunners back £7.5million.

Transfer chief Edu almost splashed out considerably more than that several weeks ago, with strong interest in Dusan Vlahovic ultimately failing to bear fruit.

Instead, the 21-year-old marksman joined another Arsenal transfer target at Juventus, Arthur Melo, who was rumoured to be closing in on a north London loan spell.

Alexander Isak and Raul de Tomas were also touted as targets, but Real Sociedad and Espanyol both pointed towards their extortionate release clauses when the Gunners came calling.

Several stars left the Emirates last month too, perhaps most notably Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined Barcelona after a bust-up with Arteta prompted Arsenal to cancel his contract by mutual consent.
