Arsenal have come out in support of their young striker Bukayo Saka after his penalty miss against Italy last night. Saka, 19, missed England’s last penalty of the night which handed the Euros to an unruly Italian side.

After his spot kick was saved, along with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford who also couldn’t convert, the three young players were all subjected to racial abuse on social media from online trolls.

Arsenal’s official Twitter tweeted: “Football can be so cruel. But for your personality. For your character. For your bravery…

“We’ll always be proud of you. And we can’t wait to have you back with us.”

The abuse has widely been condemned, by the FA and Gareth Southgate.

The FA said: “We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team.

“We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.

“We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation, so this abuse has real life consequences.”

England fans have been criticised for their behaviour yesterday, which saw 49 ‘fans’ arrested, and 19 police officers sustain injuries.

The Metropolitan Police released a statement saying: “Thank you to the tens of thousands of fans who had good spirits and behaved responsibly,

“We made 49 arrests during the day for a variety of offences. We will have officers on hand throughout the night.

“Frustratingly, 19 of our officers were injured while they confronted volatile crowds. This is wholly unacceptable. A big thanks to officers across London and our blue light colleagues for their part in keeping Londoner’s safe and moving tonight.”

England narrowly missed out on their first ever European Championship, falling victim to Roberto Mancini’s Italy side that are now unbeaten in 34 games.

Italy were aggressive at times, and many felt they threw in a few too many dirty challenges, notably on Jack Grealish and Saka, however, they did what they had to do.

The abuse Saka, Sancho and Rashford received afterwards has been rightly condemned by all.

At just 19, Saka was clearly devastated after his penalty miss, and many have since jumped to defend the young hot prospect.

Southgate has admitted the blame falls on his shoulders as he decides who takes the penalties.

The England boss said: “I decided on the penalty takers based on what we’ve done in training.

“Nobody is on their own. That’s my call and it totally rests on me.”
