Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has suggested that Gunners owner Stan Kroenke could help the club to regain their Premier League title-winning credentials by funding a £200million spending spree in the summer transfer window. The north London outfit are in need of reinforcements all over the pitch in order to build on this season’s disappointing eighth-placed finish at the next available opportunity.
Arsenal will be absent from European competition for the first time in over 25 years when the new campaign gets underway as a result of their lacklustre recent efforts.
Mikel Arteta struggled to get the best out of his playing squad in his first full season at the helm, with the Gunners lacking a creative spark and making a number of critical defensive errors as a result of the Spaniard’s insistence on starting attacks from the back.
The arrival of Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid in January addressed their need for a quality playmaker, but it remains to be seen whether the Norwegian midfielder can be convinced to return to the Emirates Stadium on a permanent basis.
Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly prepared to give the 22-year-old the opportunity to prove himself at the Bernabeu, suggesting that any attempts by Arsenal to bring him back to the capital could be in vain.
The likes of Manchester United outcast Jesse Lingard and Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish have also been linked with the 13-time English champions in recent months.

However, the No 10 role is not the only area in need of improvement, with the additions of a new right-back and a deep-lying midfielder also believed to be high on Arteta’s list of transfer priorities.
Although Arsenal will be hopeful of leading a fruitful summer window, it seems as though player sales will be required in order to bolster the club’s transfer kitty, with money still tight as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite this, Campbell has urged Kroenke to fund Arteta’s business from his own pocket by chipping in with at least £200m between now and the start of the new season.
“I will be honest, I don’t know if £100m would be enough,” the 51-year-old told Football Insider.
“It would be nice if they could invest £500m! £100m does not get you much in the transfer market these days. If you want to sign quality, £100m would only get you two decent players.
“If you want to sign a top, top player like a Grealish you need to be spending £80m. If Stan Kroenke would write a cheque for £200m now I would take it.
“I think that’s how much money needs to be invested into this side to make them challengers again. It’s a huge summer for Arsenal.”
Arteta has already declared that he will be looking to conduct a large-scale overhaul of his playing squad over the next few months, suggesting back in March that a major reshuffle could soon be on the cards if the stars align in the club’s favour.
“We don’t know yet because we have so many things to do,” the Arsenal boss told reporters when quizzed on his transfer plans.
“We have people on loan, people finishing contracts. There has been a lot going on in the last two transfer windows. The amount of things that had to be done was probably unprecedented and it will be again in the summer.
“We are trying to put a plan together to see the resources that we have, how much we want to improve, how we’re going to do it and at what cost. There are so many factors, it’s not just about one thing or an [financial] amount.
“It’s about the project and, timewise, how to build it is going to take some effort from everybody and we know that. The challenging moments that we are facing at the moment is making it even harder.”
