Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke made an embarrassing slip-up after his Los Angeles Rams were victorious in the 2022 Super Bowl. The 74-year-old dedicated his team’s triumph to the “great fans of Los Angeles”, but his claims that the Rams’ Super Bowl success was a first for the city are wide of the mark.
The Rams were confirmed as two-time Super Bowl champions on their home field as they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 courtesy of a late turnaround.
The success was a first triumph for the franchise since 2000 when they lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy under their previous guise of the St. Louis Rams.
Having led 13-10 at the half-time interval, the hosts found themselves 20-16 behind heading into the final minute-and-a-half of the final quarter following an inspired Bengals comeback.
Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp then scored his second touchdown to secure the trophy with quarterback Matthew Stafford leading a game-winning 15-play drive.

Kroenke, who owns both Arsenal and the Rams, received the Vince Lombardi Trophy on behalf of his team, but promptly made an embarrassing gaffe during his post-game acceptance speech.
“It’s amazing, and I am just really proud of this group,” the American real estate tycoon declared. “So happy for them, and then you talk about these players.
“They’re unbelievable, and they just hung in there. It was a tough game and I’m just so proud of them executing like they did.
“As far as building this stadium goes, I think it turned out alright.

“Thanks to the great fans of Los Angeles, your first Super Bowl trophy in Rams house.”
However, while Kroenke was quick to highlight how he had delivered the city’s first ever Super Bowl success, fans promptly pointed out that this isn’t strictly true.
The Los Angeles Raiders lay claim to that honour having beaten the Washington Redskins 38-9 back in January 1984 at Super Bowl XVIII.
Kroenke’s cheeky “I think it turned out alright” quip was a shot towards his critics in reference to the SoFi Stadium – the state-of-the-art venue for the NFL championship game.
Opened in September 2020, the arena was the result of a whopping £4billion investment.
The Rams became only the second team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers became the first just twelve months ago.
Following his Super Bowl triumph with the Rams, Arsenal fans will be desperately hoping Kroenke can deliver a similar level of success to North London.
The Gunners won’t be adding to their silverware collection this season however, having failed to qualify for European football and been knocked out of both domestic cups last month.
Mikel Arteta’s men also currently languish down in sixth place in the Premier League, a staggering 24 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.
