Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil fuels talk of Fenerbahce switch

Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil openly discusses his life-long love of Fenerbahce and the district of Istanbul where they play in Twitter Q&A – in strongest hint yet that he will end his footballing exile by joining the Turkish club this month

  • Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil took part in a Twitter Q&A with fans on Monday evening
  • Many were wondering whether the Arsenal outcast would reveal his next move
  • While he didn’t reveal anything huge, he teased fans about a Fenerbahce switch
  • The playmaker has been heavily linked with the Turkish giants in recent days

Mesut Ozil has teased Fenerbahce fans about a potential move from Arsenal, claiming they are the ‘biggest club’ in Turkey during a Twitter Q&A on Monday night.

Ozil’s time at Arsenal is coming to an underwhelming end after he was exiled from manager Mikel Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads this season.

The German, the club’s highest paid player on £350,000-per-week, has not played since the coronavirus pandemic stopped football in its tracks last March.

And he teased fans on Sunday when he told them that he would reveal all about his past, present and the future on Monday evening – with many wondering whether he would disclose his next move.

But while he didn’t drop a bombshell liked many hoped he would, Ozil did fuel talk of a move to Fenerbahce, with whom he has been heavily linked to recently.

When asked by a fan on Twitter why he likes the club, Ozil replied: ‘I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany – every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany.

‘And mine was Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.’

Just before that tweet, Ozil sent Fenerbahce fans into a frenzy by revealing that Kadikoy – where Fenerbahce are based – is his favourite district in Istanbul.

Ozil – who has also been linked to DC United – has been expected to seal a switch to Turkish side Fenerbahce soon with no future in sight at Arsenal with his bumper contract at the Emirates expiring at the end of the season.

Ozil has reportedly agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Fenerbahce after holding talks with the Turkish club’s directors via video conference last week.

The Sun recently reported that Ozil is happy to leave north London this month, but only if the club continue to pay the remainder of his salary over the next two years – which would see Arsenal give him £68,000-a-week until the summer of 2023.

Meanwhile, reports in Turkey claimed that both Arsenal and Ozil have entered talks over his remaining wages, which could pave the way for him to move on this January transfer window.

Ozil took to Twitter on Sunday night to tell his fans that he will be answering their questions

And speaking on Monday, Fenerbahce chief Ali Koc even revealed that the club are ‘closer than ever before’ to signing the Arsenal outcast.

‘Let me tell you the latest on Mesut Ozil,’ said Fenerbahce chief Koc to Canal+. ‘We’ve said it would be a dream for Fenerbahce.

‘The club knows what the coach wants and our transfer policy is guided by that. There hasn’t been an official announcement.

‘What I can say is we are closer than before. There may be a resolution, there may not be a resolution. Fenerbahce SK will make the announcement when the time comes.’
