Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will be on red-alert after it emerged that Paris Saint-Germain are adding another world-class goalkeeper to their ranks for next season. Both north London clubs are believed to be looking to bring in a new keeper this summer, and PSG’s move for Gianluigi Donnarumma could have a knock-on effect in the transfer market.

Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG are on the verge of completing a five-year deal for AC Milan’s Donnarumma this week.

The youngster – who made his Milan bow aged just 16, and his Italy debut just a year later – has already got 215 club appearances to his name for the Rossoneri, despite his tender age of 22.

And, with Milan keen to sell some of their prized assets amidst financial uncertainty, Donnarumma looks set to be snapped up by PSG as part of a major transfer spree by the Qatari-run club.

Current Paris No 1 Keylor Navas is unlikely to be impressed if he is pushed out of the first-team jersey by the new arrival, and would be a massive coup for any Premier League club.

Tottenham are looking to groom a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris over the coming seasons, while Arsenal are open to competition or a replacement for Bernd Leno. But Costa Rica captain Navas would likely only move to either club were he to be certain of being considered first-choice.

It has also been suggested that PSG are signing Italian youngster Donnarumma as a longer-term option rather than an immediate first-choice pick, and could be open to immediately sending the 22-year-old on a season-long loan.

“Donnarumma to PSG only really makes sense if he goes somewhere else for at least next season,” French football expert Jonathan Johnson said.

“Putting him in a rivalry with Navas, who has been outstanding so far in Paris, is massively risky. Especially when the goalkeeping position is a fetish topic for the local press.”

Such an arrangement would certainly interest both London clubs as an option to add strength in depth, although PSG would likely demand guarantees of minimum first-team playing time that may scupper any such move.

One almost-certain casualty of Donnarumma’s arrival in the French capital will be three-cap French international goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who impressed on loan at Fulham this season.

The 28-year-old was expected to stay at Craven Cottage permanently had the club avoided relegation from the Premier League, but is now a potential transfer option for both Arsenal and Spurs, with AS Roma also reportedly interested.

Donnarumma’s arrival in Paris is expected to be one of three big-name signings in the coming weeks, with Georginio Wijnaldum expected to arrive on a free transfer and Inter’s Achraf Hakimi linked with a £60million move.
