Mikel Arteta may have thrown his own job into doubt with an incredibly honest assessment of Arsenal’s progress under his leadership. While the Spaniard still has the full backing of the Gunners board, he has admitted that the club’s Premier League position (10th) is unacceptable, which could increase the stakes between now and the end of the campaign.

Arsenal have produced to of their best results of the season in the past two matches and they will take the positives into this weekend’s meeting with Burnley.

The Gunners were staring down the barrel of Europa League elimination against Olympiacos before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s late winner spared their blushes in Greece.

Arteta’s men then back up the performance with a solid 3-1 win on the road against Leicester, a result that will count for nothing if they go and lose at Turf Moor.

Last season, there were glimpses of huge promise as Arsenal beat both Manchester City and Chelsea to win the FA Cup.

But the squad have failed to kick on and have struggled to grasp Arteta’s ideas in what has been a topsy-turvey season.

The Arsenal boss is not hiding though and takes full accountability for his side’s fortunes, as he vows to turn things around.

“When you look at the league table it is not acceptable. We are Arsenal Football Club and we should be nowhere near here. If somebody is happy with that he is in the wrong place,” Arteta said during his press conference.

“A year ago if you’d have told me everything that’s happened I would have said ‘what are you talking about?’ But the reality is that a lot has happened so let’s go day by day.

“We are very far. Very, very far (from where we want to be). There’s still a lot to improve, a lot of quality to add. Much more efficient in decision making, much quicker to open situations up when advantages are there.

“We need more control of games, more defensive actions in the opponent’s half, fewer giveaways in our own half, more clean sheets. There’s a lot to do – more goals to score, more creativity. A lot to do.

“The previous Burnley game was very strange when we looked at it, the amount of chances that we created. We went down to ten men, conceded from a set-piece and then it is a disaster. But look at the team is right now, I think it’s always a good way of seeing the progression.”

Should fans have been in the stadium this season, there is every chance that Arteta may have found himself under more pressure.

But in the view of the former Manchester City assistant, the absence of supporters can only be viewed as a negative as he longs for the return of the club’s 12th man.

He added: “For me I only see negative and not having fans around, not having that passion and energy that they provide, having people supporting and watching your home game and away game and having that link and that relation. For me it is all negative.

“And if they have to show disappointment then ok, then you want to see why they are very disappointed.

“As from TV everything looks a little bit different. And the players really need them back and to just play for them which is what we do.”
