Arsenal may revive Sheffield United transfer interest as £12m clause emerges

Sander Berge's release clause at Sheffield United has reportedly dropped from £40million to £12million because of their relegation from the Premier League – which could tempt Arsenal to revive their interest in the midfielder.

The Blades' inevitable relegation was finally confirmed when they slumped to a 1-0 defeat away at Wolves on April 18, which was their 26th loss out of 32 games at the time.

They will now have to brace themselves for a mass exodus at Bramall Lane in the summer transfer window, with several of their best players unlikely to stick around and play Championship football next season.

One of those stars is Berge, 23, who has impressed in the middle of the park since completing a £22million move from Genk back in January 2020.

The Norway international has been tipped to go on and enjoy a bright career, and earlier in the campaign he was attracting attention from Arsenal.

Reports suggested back in November that the Gunners were eyeing up a move for Berge who had a £40million release clause in his Sheffield United contract at the time.

However, Sky claim that figure has since dropped to £12million because of a relegation clause in the deal, which may convince Mikel Arteta to come back in for him this summer.

They have also been dumped out of the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League this term, suffering a semi-final defeat against Villarreal in the latter competition last week.

As a result, Arteta will likely look to bolster his midfield in the summer, with Dani Ceballos due to head back to Real Madrid and Thomas Partey proving too injury prone since arriving from Atletico Madrid last year.

And Berge, who has made 32 appearances for the Blades, could be the perfect cut-price option for him.
