Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman was an instantly recognisable face in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Seaman’s incredible feats in goal were crucial in the Gunners winning three Premier League titles, including two league and cup doubles, during his time in north London. And the Arsenal legend was made even more iconic by his trademark moustache and long hair.
The now 60-year-old’s luscious locks are long gone – but take a look back at any of his major games for England or Arsenal in the early 2000s and it’s visible in all its glory. Seaman has now shed light on the birth of the ponytail – as well as the hilarious response from his team-mates – for the first time in an exclusive interview with Daily Star Sport.

Speaking ahead of World Heart Day as an ambassador for the British Heart Foundation, Seaman said: “The ponytail came about because I was growing my hair long, my dad had long hair. I just fancied it but then it got in my eyes a couple of times and I was like, ‘Well, I need to keep it back.’
“It's just weird because if you look at Euro 2000 pictures, I didn't have the ponytail. I only played for another four years after that but everybody remembers me with a ponytail.”

Asked about how his daring hair-do went down at Arsenal’s London Colney training centre, Seaman laughingly said: “No-one dared prank me, don't forget I'm six foot four, I'm a big unit.
"But I remember when I first wore the ponytail in training, I was trying it out in a hair band. The lads saw me for the first time and they were like, ‘Oh my God, what do you look like’ and all that sort of thing. .
"The goalkeepers would go out onto the pitch half an hour before the first team went, because we’d do our bits and then we’d all join up. So as they come out, they all start running past our training area where the goal is.
"They've all got headbands on and little ponytails sticking out the back of their heads, Dennis Berkgamp and the rest of them. It was very funny but that was as much as I let them get away with.”
Three of Seaman’s most well-remembered moments came while sporting the ponytail. The first – winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in 2002, and the third – lifting the FA Cup as Arsenal captain in his last ever game for the club.
In-between that came an excruciating moment for England where Ronaldinho of Brazil lobbed him from 40-yards, knocking them out of the competition and leaving Seaman heartbroken. But time has since healed old wounds, and both moustache and ponytail have gone with it.
“I was born with a tache,” Seaman chuckled. “It was always there even as a 14 or 15 year old, it grew out and I was like ‘phwoar’ and I just kept it. I had to shave it off once for a Leeds United team photo because none of the apprentices were allowed any facial hair."
