Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has aimed a subtle dig at Tottenham Hotspur while also expressing his doubts over current boss Mikel Arteta. The Gunners boss was under an enormous amount of pressure at the start of the season when Arsenal were comfortably beaten in their first three Premier League matches of the new campaign.

A run of three consecutive victories against Norwich City, Burnley and Tottenham eased the pressure on the former Manchester City assistant.

But after a stale 0-0 draw away to Brighton and Hove Albion, the heat has been cranked up on Arteta once more.

One of his most recent critics is Arsenal’s legendary forward Henry, who highlighted his concerns around Arteta and the current team.

But, in doing so, the Frenchman could not resist also having a little dig at their north London rivals.

“I’ve seen us beating Norwich before, winning at Burnley, beating Tottenham at home – because we always beat Tottenham at home,” Henry said as quoted by The Sun.

“I don’t know if things are going in the right direction. I watched the Brighton game.

“I was more than happy when we beat Tottenham as we were on a good run, but I was waiting to see a performance, away from home, against a team that passes the ball. And, instead, we suffered.”

“I was waiting to see the Brighton game, to see if we could have the ball and keep the ball, away from home, retaining possession, against a dangerous Brighton side.”

Arsenal ripped the contest away from Tottenham with a devastating first-half display, stamping Nuno Espirito Santo’s side into the grass with three goals in the first 22 minutes.

DON’T MISS

Emile Smith-Rowe opened the scoring before Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka put Arteta’s side into an unassailable position.

While the Gunners conceded a consolation goal converted by Son Heung-min, Arsenal were always in control of the contest.

Their goalless draw with Brighton appears to have raised some alarm bells for Henry, who suggested they have strayed too far from the traditional attacking style Arsenal were once famous for.

“When we used to lose, even after I left the team, it was always said that ‘Arsenal don’t have a Plan B’ and that ‘they passed too much for the sake of passing’” said the Frenchman.

“But I didn’t see that from Arsenal in the Brighton match. I saw Brighton do that.”

Arsenal’s next four Premier League games are against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Leicester City and Watford before they face title contenders Liverpool and Manchester United in November.

And Henry believes the next run of fixtures will provide a huge challenge for Arteta’s men, particularly when they travel to Old Trafford to face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

“United have been better than us but you never know what can happen,” Henry added.

“It took us 14 years to win there again last season but even in my time it was difficult to win there.

“United now have, in Ronaldo, someone who can turn their problems into solutions, and they have a good squad.”

The Gunners currently sit in 11th place after their recent revival and are currently four points adrift of the top four places.
